Holiday Printmaking Cards
Title: Holiday Printmaking Cards
Type of Project: Guided Exploration
Project Description: Students learned about the artform of creating a block print and the art of repetition. Students learned carving, inking, and printing techniques that allowed them to make two sets of holiday cards and helped them appreciate the skillful intensity that master printmakers, such as Albrecht Durer, needed to complete their intricate works of art.
Processes and Activities: Students were shown a slideshow featuring work of printmaking artists Albrecht Durer, Kathe Kolwitz, Andy Warhol, Hokusai, and others and were exposed to different kinds of printmaking forms (linoleum cut, copper plate, woodcut, etc.). We discussed the origins of this artstyle and gained an appreciation for the skill needed to work in this type of art. Students watched a demonstration on carving, inking, and printing and then began their own work.
Evaluation Criteria:
1. Prints are evenly placed on paper with no smudging around edges
2. Additional usage of color or added details are neat, crafted well, and compliment the nature of the card.
3. Two sets of five were created, assignment was complete.
4. Clean up was done everyday and care was taken of materials. Class time was well used.
5. Creative solution to the assignment. You worked to create a unique artwork that has taken a life of it’s own! You took risks with this project and worked to make it one of a kind.
6. Artist Statement is thoughtfully written, with reflection on your process and explanation of the drawing being a priority.
7. Print is detailed, line weight is considered, and the composition is balanced.
